Road to RootsTech 2025: Your Ultimate Conference Checklist

Updated: Feb 27

Just ONE WEEK remains until RootsTech 2025, and whether you’re a seasoned genealogist or a first-time attendee, preparation is key to really making the most out of the three days! As we know, RootsTech offers a wide variety of opportunities to connect, learn, and grow. From insightful workshops to cutting-edge technologies, I have a feeling this will be a year we can really take to heart the yearly theme and DISCOVER more than ever.

Three years ago, my husband and I stepped foot into the RootsTech convention hall for the first time and to say I was a little overwhelmed is an understatement. With so many incredible companies on the showroom floor, I didn’t even know where to begin. I was a beginner family history enthusiast and with so much information available at my fingertips, it felt like I was drinking through a firehose…and I wasn’t even attending any classes!

Last year was our first year attending the conference as an exhibitor, and while I knew a little bit more than I did the first go around, I was still confused and overwhelmed by the sheer volume of information that exists just in the conference hall. As I began talking to people I realized how much I was missing out on by not having fully prepared myself for all the wonderful things the conference has to offer.

One of my husband’s signature phrases, as taught to him by his stepfather is, “proper planning prevents poor performance.” Obviously, it’s a sentiment that can be used in all aspects of life, but as RootsTech approaches, I’ve been reminded just how crucial it is when preparing for such an incredible conference. With that in mind, we’ve put together a simple checklist to help you get fully ready for an unforgettable week in Salt Lake City. So without further ado, here are five top tips that will help you get the most out of your RootsTech experience!

1. Create Your Personalized Conference Schedule

With hundreds of sessions, workshops, and special events to choose from, planning ahead is essential to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Some classes will also fill quickly (some have even already been filled!) so it’s crucial to take a look ahead of time to ensure you’re getting the lessons you’re most interested in.

Pro-Tip: Browse the RootsTech session catalog and mark the ones that interest you most. Plan out your must-attend events first BUT also leave room for unexpected discoveries. One of my favorite parts of the conference are the relationships that build over the three days. Leaving a couple of open spots allows you to pop into a class with a new friend, linger a little longer at a booth you’re interested in, and even just enjoy the surroundings of the expo hall.

2. Download the RootsTech App

The RootsTech app is your go-to tool for everything happening at the conference. The app is a one-stop shop where you can access schedules, view a list of exhibitors and maps of the venue, participate in discussions, and even connect with relatives attending RootsTech!

Pro-Tip: Turn on those notifications! It’s easy to get caught up in all the hoopla taking place throughout the convention center. Having your app notifications on will help you stay on task throughout the week!

3. Prepare Your Questions for Experts

RootsTech is full of experts in various fields. Whether you’re working on a family tree, researching ancestors, or looking to preserve a loved one’s story, it’s the perfect time to ask questions and learn from the best.

Pro-Tip: Choose three topics (these could range from basic genealogy to technology and beyond) and write down your top 3-5 questions relating to that topic. Throughout the week, ask your questions during workshops, when you visit booths, or even when you’re just chatting with other attendees. Don’t forget to bring a pen and paper or a digital note-taking app so you can have each answer recorded!

4. Pack Smart for the Conference

Days can get long with a good amount of walking, so being prepared with the right gear will help keep you comfortable and focused!

Pro-Tip: Pack essentials like a notebook, comfortable shoes/clothing, chargers for your devices, some snacks, and a reusable water bottle. Don’t forget business cards for networking!

5. Bring a Friend (or Two!)

The more the merrier! We’re firm believers that sharing an experience is one of the best ways to enjoy it. Family history is something that applies to EVERYONE and this is the perfect place to build excitement in someone who might be a bit of a beginner in the genealogy space.

Pro-Tip: Invite family members, friends, or colleagues to the exhibitor floor on the first day. This is a great way to build up some excitement about family history by showing them the various aspects it entails. Is your bestie a crafter? Take them by a booth that has family history tree art. Has your brother caught the travel bug? Kindred Lands is right next to our booth this year and is one of our favorites for making family history an experience with their various travel plans. And of course, if you’ve got someone who wants to chat, we’d love to have them stop by and share a story or two! No matter the personality, RootsTech offers something for everyone!
